Czech vignette

Are you planning to cross the Czech Republic by car, motorcycle, or motorhome? To drive on highways and toll roads, a Czech vignette is mandatory. Managed by the SFDI (Státní fond dopravní infrastruktury), this electronic vignette replaces the old sticker that was affixed to the windshield. Now, a simple registration of your license plate number is sufficient.

Where to buy your vignette online? What are the prices and points of sale? How to avoid a toll fine?

Don't waste time waiting in line at border crossings or gas stations. Get your Czech vignette in just a few clicks and drive with peace of mind on the road network.

What is the price of the Czech vignette in 2024-2025?

What is the Czech vignette?

The Czech vignette is an electronic toll necessary for driving on highways and certain expressways in the country. Established by the SFDI (Státní fond dopravní infrastruktury), it has replaced the old adhesive vignette since 2021. Now, there is no physical document to affix to the windshield: everything is recorded digitally via your license plate number.

Its purpose is to finance the maintenance of the highway network and to smooth traffic by eliminating toll barriers. This vignette is mandatory for most vehicles under 3.5 tons. Vehicles over 3.5t, such as trucks, are subject to a different toll system based on the distance traveled.

Who must buy a vignette for the Czech Republic?

The purchase of an electronic vignette is mandatory for all vehicles under 3.5 tons traveling on highways and certain expressways. This includes:

  • Private cars
  • Motorhomes
  • Light commercial vehicles

However, certain types of vehicles are exempt from this obligation:

  • Motorcycles and trikes
  • Trailers (if the towing vehicle has a vignette)
  • Disabled persons holding a Czech disability card of type ZTP or ZTP/P
  • Electric and hydrogen vehicles
  • Diplomatic and emergency vehicles

Where is the Czech digital vignette mandatory?

The affected routes are identifiable by a blue sign with a white highway. In the Czech Republic, highways are marked with a D (Dálnice) and expressways with an R (Rychlostní silnice).

Checks and fines: what you need to know

In the Czech Republic, the control of electronic vignettes is fully automated. Cameras placed on highways scan license plates and compare them with the national database. Random checks are also carried out by the police at rest areas and fast lanes.

If you drive without a valid Czech vignette on a toll road, you risk an immediate fine of up to €850. In case of proven fraud (e.g., false declaration of exemption), the fine can reach €8,000.

Attention: penalties in case of violation

✔️ Absence of vignette: up to €850 fine

✔️ Error or fraud on the exemption: up to €8,000

✔️ Unreported license plate modification: €200

What to do if I make a mistake when purchasing my vignette?

An error on the license plate number or validity period can lead to problems during checks. Fortunately, modifications are possible under certain conditions.

If you realize the error before the start date of validity, you can correct it via the official portal or by contacting the customer service of the site where you purchased your vignette. Some platforms allow changing up to two characters of the license plate for free.

If the vignette is already active, the correction becomes more complicated. You will need to provide proof of license plate modification (e.g., updated registration card). In some cases, purchasing a new vignette will be necessary.

Note: common errors and how to avoid them

✔️ Double-check your license plate before validation

✔️ Ensure that the start of validity matches your departure day

  • Zero tolerance for alcohol while driving: even a non-alcoholic beer can be a problem
  • Dipped headlights required during the day and at night
  • Absolute priority for pedestrians at crosswalks
  • Trams always have priority, including over cars and pedestrians
  • Use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited, except with a hands-free kit

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is there a special vignette for motorcycles?

No, motorcycles and trikes are exempt from the vignette requirement in the Czech Republic. They can use the highways and expressways of the country for free.

Is the transfer of a vignette possible?

No, an electronic vignette is strictly linked to a license plate and cannot be transferred to another vehicle. If you change cars, you will need to buy a new vignette. In case of loss or theft of the license plate, a modification is possible if you provide proof (registration document, theft declaration). This process must be done before the vignette expires.
