Need a vignette for your trip to Austria? Prices vary according to the duration of validity and the type of vehicle (car or motorcycle).
Vignette prices
Here are the prices in effect for 2024-2025:
Good to know: Vignette prices increase slightly each year, depending on inflation and the maintenance costs of roads and highways.
Why is an e-vignette mandatory in Austria?
All vehicles up to 3.5 tons must pay for a vignette to drive on the motorways and certain tolls in Austria since January 1, 1997. Managed by ASFINAG, this fee finances the maintenance of the road network and applies to both major routes connecting cities and tourist roads. Heavy vehicles (+3.5 tons) must use the GO-Box system.
Motorways requiring a vignette
If you plan to drive in Austria, the main motorways are all subject to the vignette requirement (A1 to A26). They cross the country from West to East and connect major cities as well as tourist areas. For example, you can find:
- A1 West (Vienna – Salzburg)
- A2 South (Vienna – Villach)
- A9 Pyhrn (Wels – Graz, via Upper Austria)
- A10 Tauern (Salzburg – Villach)
- A11 Karawanken (Villach – Slovenia)
- A12 Inn (Kufstein – Innsbruck)
- A13 Brenner (Innsbruck – Brenner Pass, Italy)
- S16 Arlberg (Bludenz – Landeck, via the Arlberg)
Roads exempt from the digital vignette
Certain sections of motorways have been exempted from the vignette requirement to facilitate traffic, especially near the German borders and in urban areas. Here are the free sections:
- A1 (Walserberg – Salzburg-Nord)
- A12 (Kiefersfelden – Kufstein-Süd)
- A14 (Hörbranz – Hohenems)
- A26 (Linz Westring, under construction)
Some sections require an additional toll
In addition to the e-vignette, certain alpine road sections and tunnels require an additional payment due to their high maintenance costs. Before hitting the road, make sure to check the applicable rates to avoid unpleasant surprises:
- Bosruck and Gleinalm Tunnels (A9)
- Tauern and Katschberg Tunnels (A10)
- Karawanken Tunnel (A11)
- Brenner Motorway (A13)
- Arlberg Tunnel (S16)
Which vignette to choose?
Traveling in Austria involves complying with toll obligations. Choosing the vignette suitable for your trip and duration of stay is therefore essential for any motorized vehicle (car, caravan, two wheels, etc.). Discover the different options available.
Types of vignettes available
There are several types of Austrian vignettes, which vary according to the validity duration of the vignette:
- 1-day vignette : valid for a single working day. If you buy the vignette on March 17 at 12:01 PM to use it that same day, it will only be valid until 11:59 PM.
- 10-day vignette (first day of validity + 9 additional days) : ideal for short stays or vacations.
- 2-month vignette : suitable for regular travelers over an extended period. By purchasing your pass on May 12, it will end on July 12 inclusive.
- Annual vignette : valid for 14 months from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the following year. No extension possible.
The difference between vignette and GO-BOX
Heavy vehicles (+3500 kg), including trucks, buses, and some motorhomes, are not subject to the vignette but must use the GO-BOX system. Unlike the vignette, which is a prepaid flat rate, the GO-BOX operates with an electronic toll based on the distance traveled (calculated with a GPS tracker). The device, to be fixed inside the vehicle, automatically records each passage and calculates the rate based on the kilometers traveled, the type of vehicle, and its CO₂ emission level.
📌 Note: The GO-BOX must be preloaded or linked to a payment method, and checks are frequent on Austrian motorway sections.
Where and how to buy your Austria vignette?
You have two options: the electronic vignette, which is faster and more convenient, or the adhesive vignette, available at certain physical sales points. Here's everything you need to know to purchase the vignette that meets your needs.
Buy in an online shop: the fastest solution
Opting for an electronic vignette allows you to avoid waiting at gas stations and to drive immediately after purchase. Available on eVignette and Asfinag, it is directly linked to your license plate number, thus eliminating the risk of loss or deterioration of a sticker on the windshield due to weather conditions.
Online purchasing is simple and secure:
- 1️⃣ Select the desired validity period (1 day, 10 days, 2 months, or annual).
- 2️⃣ Enter your license plate number.
- 3️⃣ Pay for your purchase via credit card or other secure payment methods (Paypal).
- 4️⃣ Receive a confirmation by email and hit the road without delay.
Did you know? Trailers do not need a vignette to drive in Austria. Only the towing vehicle must have one.
Buy a vignette at a gas station or tobacco shop
For those who prefer a physical vignette, it is possible to purchase it at several sales points:
- Gas stations near borders and on major routes.
- Tobacco shops and authorized retailers in Austria.
- ASFINAG sales points, the official operator of the Austrian motorway network
- ADAC and ÖAMTC
However, this method has some drawbacks:
❌ Waiting times, especially during peak periods.
❌ Risk of loss or damage to the sticker.
❌ Immediate validity, making it impossible to anticipate its acquisition in advance.
Attention: During high season, waiting lines at gas stations can be long. It is better to buy your vignette before your departure to avoid inconveniences.
Where to place the vignette on your vehicle?
Here's how to place your sticker once you have the vignette in your possession.
- Cars and motorhomes : Stick the vignette on the inside of the windshield, on the left side or behind the interior rearview mirror.
- Motorcycles : Fix it on a visible and non-removable part of the vehicle (e.g.: front fork, fuel tank).
Do not stick it on a tinted area of the windshield, as this could make it unreadable during automatic checks.

Comparison with neighboring countries
Regulations and prices vary according to neighboring countries:
- 🇨🇭 Switzerland : Only one mandatory annual vignette (40 CHF ~ 41 €) for all vehicles, with no short-term option.
- 🇸🇮 Slovenia : A system similar to Austria with vignettes for 7 days, 1 month, or 1 year (starting from 16 € for 7 days).
- 🇩🇪 Germany : No vignette for passenger cars, but a specific toll is in place for heavy goods vehicles via the Toll Collect system.
Tip: If you are crossing several countries, check local regulations in advance to avoid fines and save time at checkpoints.
Validity and checks: Don't risk a fine!
Driving without a vignette in Austria means risking an immediate fine of at least 120 € for cars and caravans, as well as 65 € for motorcycles. Without exception, checks are frequent and automated to ensure that each vehicle is compliant. Before hitting the road, it is essential to check the validity of your vignette, whether it is electronic or paper.
Where and how is the vignette checked in Austria?
Austrian authorities use a rigorous control system combining automatic surveillance and on-site checks:
- Fixed cameras : installed at the entrances and exits of highways and expressways, they scan license plates.
- ASFINAG patrols : teams conduct random checks, including at rest areas and border posts.
- Mobile checkpoints : vehicles equipped with cameras circulate to detect offenders in real-time.
Note that fines can be doubled in case of manipulation of the vignette (if you manually change the validity date, for example) and can reach 3,000 € in case of non-payment.
Which vehicles are exempt from a digital vignette?
Currently, all vehicles registered in Ukraine are exempt from vignettes and road tolls in Austria. This exemption also applies to any driver—regardless of nationality—transporting refugees on behalf of a humanitarian organization. This applies to both passenger cars and trucks and buses. Before driving, it is mandatory to fill out an exemption request form. This is available on the ASFINAG website.
Several other categories of vehicles may benefit from a vignette exemption:
- Persons with disabilities holding a disability card indicating the inability to use public transport. You can then obtain a free digital vignette from ASFINAG, provided that the vehicle is registered in your name and you meet the eligibility criteria. This exemption does not apply to foreign vehicles.
- Military vehicles, according to § 2 Z38 of the KFG 1967.
- Vehicles equipped with flashing lights, in accordance with § 20 (paragraph 1, letter d, and paragraph 5) of the KFG 1967. The latter must be clearly visible on the vehicle.
- Public service vehicles, such as public safety, tax administration, or judicial custody.
- Vehicles participating in peacekeeping missions of international organizations (UN, SFOR, IFOR), according to § 1, paragraph 7, Z1 of BGBL No. 677/1977.
Can you drive without a vignette on certain roads?
Yes, but only on a few secondary roads and certain exempted sections of highways. Among them:
- A1 (between Walserberg and Salzburg-Nord)
- A12 (from Kiefersfelden to Kufstein-Süd)
- A14 (from the Hörbranz border post to Hohenems)
These exemptions mainly aim to ease traffic near border areas. However, as soon as you use a toll road, the vignette becomes mandatory again.
